To offer the most complete vision care services for children.
Children should be examined early and often. Children may change very quickly. The demands and challenges for their visual system increase every year. Subtle visual problems may reduce your child's attention, comprehension, coordination and general school performance.
Vision is dominant in brain function and learning, and it will always be an important factor in learning, attention and sports.
Dr. O. Keene Clay, OD, FCOVD is board certified in the diagnosis and treatment of Visually Related Learning Problems. We offer Lens Therapy services, Vision Therapy Programs and we work closely with other local doctors in the care and remediation of children with a wide variety of visual conditions.
Vision is a set of skills and abilities, of which 20/20 eyesight is only one. Vision allows us to obtain meaning from what we see and to guide our actions. Necessary visual skills include eye-teaming, focusing, eye movements, visual perception, visual information processing, and visual integration. Problems in any of these areas will often reduce a child's attention, comprehension, coordination and general school performance.
Although glasses and contact lenses will make a major difference, they are not adequate to solve many learning and attention problems. They may make a significant improvement in some children but will fall short if your child is limited by the more involved two-eyed co-ordination, eye control and visual integration problems. Problems in any of these areas will often reduce a child's attention, comprehension, coordination and general school performance.
Good vision is essential for proper development and school success. The visual system in the young child is rapidly changing. If your child's eyes do not provide a clear focused image, crossed eyes, lazy eye may develop or they may lack the necessary skills for school readiness.
Early detection of problems will offer your best opportunity for prevention and treatment. In our evaluation we will assess if there is a significant refractive error and if the eyes are working well together. We will also check for the presence of any medical eye problems that would interfere with normal development. This can be done for children of any age.
At about age three, children become more interested in the small details of the world. This requires prolonged attention to detail and greater use of the ability to focus. If the visual system is not developing normally, eye turning and lazy eye may develop at this time. Therefore, by age three all children should have a vision exam by an Optometric Physician that is comfortable with children.
Dr. Clay and Dr. George have joined a national panel of doctors that are offering complementary eye exams to all children aged 6-12 months. This is part of our commitment to assure that children have a chance to start life with the essentials for normal growth and development.
